Lunch among the vineyards

Hidden among the vineyards of Birkweiler, a charming small town near Landau, lies a culinary gem that makes the trip worthwhile. We had booked a table for the lunch menu, and before heading in, we took a short stroll through the quiet streets lined with historic houses and autumn-coloured vines.

When it was time for our reservation, we went to the given address and stepped into a small, peaceful courtyard. There, we paused for a moment, wondering where to go. A few steps led us to an unmarked wooden door — understated, almost secretive. Behind it, however, we were welcomed with warmth and a bright smile.

Atmosphere

Inside, the restaurant blends modern elegance with the soul of what seems to have once been an old tavern. Dark wood, soft colours, and beautifully restored beams create an atmosphere that is both contemporary and traditional. Our table, lined with plush pillows, invited us to settle in and slow down.

They offer a fixed lunch menu, with two choices for the main course. Alongside it, wine recommendations from local vineyards. Before the menu officially began, we were spoiled with two amuse-bouches, accompanied by exceptional sourdough bread, served with olive oil and butter.

The Menu

Starter

Seared scallop paired with Hokkaido pumpkin and a macadamia vinaigrette. A beautiful balance of sweetness, nuttiness, and delicate sea flavour — autumn on a plate.

Main Course

Two choices were offered: Braised veal cheeks with Andaliman pepper, celery, and mille-feuille layers or – my choice – wild-caught dorade with a pine-nut brown butter, pointed cabbage, and a bergamot sauce. A wonderfully harmonious dish — buttery, citrusy, and still fresh.

Dessert

I opted for the Maitre Affineur, an excellent selection of raw-milk cheeses, because – shocker, I know – I’m usually not much of a dessert person.

The sweet alternative was: Soba Cha Cremeux, a dessert with yellow and red plums and Piedmontese hazelnuts, which, according to my lunch companions, was absolutely delightful.

Sweet Farewell

Just when we thought we were done, the kitchen surprised us one last time: a petit fours selection featuring Madeleines, delicate ice confectionery, and rice pudding with cream. Along with a well-pulled espresso, it was the perfect finale.

Final Thoughts

This lunch was an absolutely delightful experience — the kind of meal that leaves you content and uplifted without feeling overly full. The pacing, the flavours, the service, and the tranquil atmosphere created a sense of calm indulgence that stayed with us for the rest of the day. The price of the lunch menu – 89€ – was more than justified. For an additional charge, we could have also ordered an additional, intermediate course. But even without it, I was pleasantly dated for the rest of the day. I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit. Just make sure you book your table in advance.
